While approximately 70 percent of the earth is covered by water, only 3 percent of it is freshwater. Healthy freshwater ecosystems are a balance of vegetation, hydrology, and biological communities.
Many freshwater ecosystems have been impaired by development, agriculture, forestry practices, mining, and other intensive land uses. Such changes fragment habitats, erode shorelines, and increase sediment and pollutant loading in waterways.
Cardno JFNew's aquatic team provides necessary services to manage, protect, and enhance these valuable resources by providing these services:
Lake and stream diagnostic studies evaluate existing conditions,
identify opportunities for improvements, and establish priorities based
on cost-benefit ratios.
Monitoring & Assessment
Water quality monitoring and assessment of aquatic plants,
macroinvertebrates, mussels, and fish habitats provide a complete
understanding of a lake or stream's water quality condition.
Hydrologic modeling of streams determines flood elevations and provides data required for permitting projects within floodway boundaries.
Design-build and watershed management plans include full-service design-build solutions, such as wetland restoration,
reforestation, filter strips, in-stream grade control structures,
sediment traps, constructed wetland filters, and various low-impact
Our aquatics team works with lake associations, conservancy districts, watershed groups, and municipalities to develop watershed management plans. We can help with the grant application process with federal agencies, state agencies, and foundations for watershed plans or project feasibility studies.
The Cardno JFNew team is trained to use the Rosgen Stream Classification System to classify streams based on quantifiable measurements to produce consistent, reproducible descriptions of stream types and conditions.
In addition to providing recreation, fisheries provide data on the health of an aquatic ecosystem. Cardno JFNew has the equipment and experience to collect and analyze information on indicators for the full range of fisheries types.
