Cardno JFNew provides the full array of cultural resource management (CRM) services to document, evaluate, and preserve cultural resources. CRM services can help recognize and protect those places that define the character of a local community and reflect its past. Cardno JFNew can help clients understand and manage the risk of impacting cultural resources and assist with mitigating or resolving any adverse effects in compliance with state and federal regulations.

Archaeological sites and historic buildings are common examples of cultural resources, but other parts of the environment--both natural and built--can possess value to some cultural group or community.  Protecting these valuable markers of history from the effects of contemporary decisions is the foundation of CRM and the intent of the cultural resources assessment process.

Cultural resources include the following community assets:

Cultural Resources

Archaeological sites are products of past human life or activity. They include artifacts, structures, materials, and other environmental remains left behind by people in the past. Examples include pottery, tools, and remnants of activities such as cooking and manufacturing. Lack of public recognition or involvement can cause these sites to remain unidentified or unreported. In addition, some sites are buried under vegetation or soils, requiring more intensive actions to identify. Cardno JFNew has the experience and expertise to assist with all forms of archaeological resource identification, including using geophysical techniques to locate and delineate buried archaeological sites before they are destroyed or excavated.

Cemeteries and burial sites can potentially be found in development and re-development projects in urban, suburban, and rural areas. From historic cemeteries of early settlers to prehistoric burial sites of indigenous populations, these cultural resources are often rediscovered through the site investigation and assessment process. Cardno JFNew can conduct all aspects of cemetery investigations to ensure regulatory compliance, including identification and documentation; delineation, excavation, and disinterment; bio-archaeological analysis; and re-internment. Because the investigation, analysis, and relocation of cemeteries can be a highly emotional and sensitive undertaking, Cardno JFNew can also use geophysical techniques to locate and delineate sites to minimize disruption.

Cultural or heritage landscapes is a broad term for the special places created by human interaction with the environment that help define the character of a community and reflect its past. These places may be associated with a historically significant event, activity, person, or group of people. They may incorporate natural elements, such as water bodies, or other open spaces with human-made features, such as buildings, monuments, or roads. Cardno JFNew works with clients to identify these landscapes and determine how their role in the community may be impacted by development plans. These resources reflect real estate markets, and can attract tourism and recreation. We have the broad expertise to evaluate resources at the macroscopic level, ensuring that cultural landscapes are considered in the context of development plans and community objectives.

Historic buildings and structures possess unique design or associations with significant events or persons. They may include buried or visible remains of residential, commercial, industrial, or civic buildings designed to shelter groups of people, or other structures like bridges, dams, or lighthouses, constructed primarily for purposes other than shelter. Cardno JFNew can help identify historic properties and evaluate their significance, as well as provide direction and consultation for pursuing any appropriate grants that are available to assist homeowners or communities in designating and protecting historic properties, or to help increase tourism related to these historic structures. Federal and State tax credits may also be available to assist in historic building rehabilitation and reuse. Current resources include:
