2012 National Wetland Plant Indicator List ReleasedBack to "In The News"
July 06, 2012
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) released an updated National Wetland Plant List (NWPL), which replaces the 1988 National List of Plant Species that Occur in Wetlands. The NWPL provides general botanical information about wetland plants and is used extensively for wetland delineation, restoration, research, and for evaluating compensatory mitigation goals. After June 1, the 2012 NWPL will be used in all wetland delineations or determinations.
The 2012 NWPL has three major changes:
- The number of species on the list has increased from 6,728 to 8,200 since the 1988 list.
- The updated list features new wetland regions, which are based on Major Land Resource Areas and Land Resource Regions.
- The five wetland indicator categories were updated, using more representative qualitative ranges to determine the probable appearance of a species indicator category in a wetland.
