Sustainable Sites InitiativeBack to "In The News"

August 31, 2010

The Sustainable Sites Initiative (SITES™) was started to create voluntary national guidelines and performance benchmarks for sustainable land design, construction, and maintenance practices for

  • Open spaces like parks, conservation easements, buffer zones, and transportation rights-of-way, and
  • Built locations including industrial, retail and office parks, military complexes, airports, botanical gardens, streetscapes and plazas, residential and commercial developments, and public and private campuses.

This program is an interdisciplinary effort by the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center at The University of Texas at Austin, and the United States Botanic Garden.

In June SITES launched a two-year pilot program that includes more than 150 pilot projects that represent a diverse cross-section of project types, sizes, and geographic locations in various stages of development.

Included in the pilot program is the Purdue Research Park project in West Lafayette, Indiana. When developed, this project may include green streets, ponds, wetlands, and trails. The Purdue Research Foundation is considering this project along with partners The Schneider Corporation, JFNew, and Indiana Wildlife Federation.
